Mar 28, 2019· One of the more successful and largest underground gold mines to come out of the Georgia gold rush was the Consolidated Gold Mine. The mine was formed in 1895 when a group of northern investors bought up 7,000 acres of land around the area, along with all the smaller mines in the process, forming the Dlonega Consolidated Gold Mining Co.
The government established a branch mint at Dlonega in 1835; it produced 6 million in gold coins before closing in 1861. The mint eventually became the site of North Georgia College. In 1958, muledrawn wagons delivered 43 ounces of Dlonega gold to Atlanta to be used on the Capitol dome.
